THE HIGH COUNTRY ADVENTURE

One-day 4x4 adventure following a river through its valley along old gold miners and Maori greenstone trails to beautiful hidden lakes encircled by mountains.

  • Cross the Canterbury Plains and turn inland into the mountains
  • Climb through foothills to the top of a pass.

  • From the pass view the "Gateway to the Lakes"
  • Descend steeply into the valley of the fastest flowing river in the southern hemisphere
  • Drive along tracks clinging to rock faces with breathtaking drops into the valley below.

  • Follow the river through ancient glaciated valleys and cross numerous waterfall fed fords
  • Morning tea at the confluence of two rivers which after rain can be two colours flowing side by side
  • View waterfalls and hear the song of the Bellbird in the native bush in a forest park

  • Learn about honeydew and take in the beautiful aroma that fills the air
  • See Black Robins and Fantails in the surrounding bush
  • Hear the "silence" on still days.
  • See stunning lake reflections
  • Learn about life on a high country station and the fiercely protected "Mainland Island"

  • When the tar seal then the gravel road ends your "off road" 4wd route begins
  • Travel around (and sometimes in!) the lake
  • Splash your way through numerous water holes
  • Take in stunning reflections on the way

  • Traverse a glacial moraine before descending to another lake
  • Delicious Kiwi-style picnic lunch under a shady tree overlooking the tranquil waters
  • Short walk through native forest
  • Stroll around the lake edge or swim in the crystal clear waters
  • Fish for a little while (by prior arrangement)

Phil challenges you ... ... to try to keep your balance Touched the wire and failed the challenge

  • Afternoon tea at the side of the river and if you dare take Phil's “Swing Bridge Challenge”. Try to cross the swing bridge without holding on. Many have tried - no one has yet succeeded!

Departs Christchurch, Hanmer Springs or Waikari and includes pick up/return (Approx 9am - 5.30pm)

Prices:
One Day: $375 (including GST) per person (12 years and under half price)
includes morning and afternoon tea and a delicious Kiwi style picnic lunch.
