Explore the wild and unexplored landscapes of the South Island. This is the real New Zealand not seen from a tour bus!

Be taken on a journey to special places that the ordinary traveller is not able to reach. Travelling with 4X4 Adventures allows you access to a wilderness of moody mountains, temperamental rivers and sparkling lakes. This is vast country where wild pigs and deer, thar and chamois can sometimes be seen high above in rocky basins. See glaciers descend to snow-fed rivers that meander their way down from the valleys. This is the real New Zealand, a land where time seems to stand still and man's intervention is but a scratch on the landscape.

Canterbury

Canterbury is your gateway to the South Island and is serviced by Christchurch International Airport. Tours will usually depart from the South Island’s largest city of Christchurch, unless otherwise arranged.

Less than one hour of leaving the city, you will be immersed in some of the most beautiful countryside. Canterbury is known for the large flat grassy plains reaching to the sea and it is bordered by the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps. You will find various types of farming, from sheep and cattle to dairy and cropping here. Canterbury is also home to many New Zealand's early pioneer routes and settlements.

Clear rivers, lakes and streams are filled with Salmon, Rainbow and Brown Trout and are also used for water activities such as boating, swimming and fishing.

Banks Pennisula is renowned for its many bays and coves and is only half an hour from the city. Lyttelton Harbour and Akaroa Harbour were formed by volcanic eruptions many years ago. Here you will find a rich diverse wild life from the endangered Hector's dolphin to penguins and other bird life.

Hurunui District

The Hurunui District stretches from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean on the east coast of the South Island. Kaikoura is the largest settlement and is the central location in the South Island for whale watching and viewing other aquatic life such as penguins, dolphins and seals.

The Waipara region is renowned for its many vineyards producing a diverse range of wines, some of New Zealand's best. Hurunui is also home to the scenic alpine village of Hanmer Springs. With Geothermal Hotpools and many other outdoor activities including mountain biking, rafting, hiking and horse trekking, Hanmer is a popular holiday spot.

South Canterbury

South Canterbury is the gateway to the Southern Alps, High Country Stations and some beautiful rivers and lakes. The main attractions include salmon and trout fishing and Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak. A number of filming locations for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy are based in South Canterbury, which gives you some idea of the dramatic and impressive landscapes of this region. Our Lord of the Rings Touris based in South Canterbury and our High Country Excursions explore the High Country of the Southern Alps.

West Coast

The West Coast region stretches from the main divide of the Southern Alps to the Tasman Sea on the west coast of the South Island. Home to rugged beaches, Punakaiki's pancake rocks and blowholes, rainforests as well as Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. It is one of New Zealand's wettest regions and is one of the more remote and sparsely populated areas of the country.

Otago

Otago is home to many lakes and rivers including the Clutha River, Lake Wakatipu, Lake Wanaka and is known for it’s University town of Dunedin and New Zealand's adventure capital of Queenstown. This is a beautiful part of the country, known for it’s dramatic mountains and deep blue lakes. Queenstown is the home of AJ Hackett Bungy as well as other adrenaline inducing activities like jet boating, canyoning, rafting, parachuting and paragliding. Skiing and snowboarding are popular in winter at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and many other ski fields around the Otago region.

Gold was discovered on the Shotover River in 1862, which created a major goldrush for the region and you will see a lot of history left over from this time. Other activities in the region include winery tours, mountain biking, and cruising Lake Wakatipu on the T.S.S Earnslaw steam ship.
